What a day of mixed emotions for Santos against title pretenders Bangor Swifts. Having a carefully arranged game plan to combat the excellent experienced Swifts attack, Santos self destructed yet again in 75 secs failing totally to handle a simple cross into the box and seeing Billy Fitzsimmons smack home a gift. 6 mins later a wind assisted punt was sailing through to keeper Hughes when Stevie Walker put his head to it and deflected it into the path of veteran Ian Coulter and the ex Irish League star slotted home the gift. Two goals down to the league’s top side was bad enough but the players selected to play in specific positions were failing to stick to the plan necessitating manager Mc Geehan to have to alter his formation early on… a recipe for disaster. Gerry Brady forced into a defensive Mid Field role responded to the challenge and played brilliantly controlling and passing expertly. And Manus O Gorman up against the league’s best player in Swifts Ronan Walls was holding the ball up and looking dangerous . But he got absolutely no support.
HT saw Santos 0-2 down.
With the gusting wind at their backs Santos went for it and with skipper Mc Geehan turning in a Man of The Match performance Santos looked as if they would haul back the deficit. But just as two subs were to be introduced to give the extras fillip poor marking from a corner gifted Swifts a third through Stephen Clarke. The subs galvanised Santos who went looking for a consolation leaving themselves however open to the danger of a break . And sure enough the magnifient Ronan Walls stole through a Santos defence, appealing for offside, to leave Hughes helpless. Santos produced their best spell thereafter but an angry manager Mc Geehan slammed 2-3 players who let the rest down. “Santos are a very proud club where players give everything . To day 8 players would have died for the club, as always, but 3 players disobeyed all pre arranged tactics and merely went through the motions a totally unacceptable situation.” Bangor and 18th N Abbey have set the standard that I’m determined Santos will follow next season” wryly adding “ when I clear out the dead wood”
