Newtownbreda 4  Santos 0

The new year opened with a beautiful day, a superb surface and a fine game. Newtownbreda were fit and skilful and went for the Santos’ jugular early on. And it was only 5 mins before they drew blood.  Santos’ skipper Mc Geehan played a dreadful pass outside his own box to give Newtownbreda a corner.  From the kick the ball was headed home powerfully by Ian Mc Gowan.  The Breda  man who 5 seasons ago notched 50 goals  was a great asset to his side and gave them the start they deserved.   3 mins later the Santos self destruction was complete.  Ignoring the danger posed by long throws into the box, Santos foolishly conceded another  needless throw.  The missile dispatched was heading straight into the Santos net as both keeper Mc Veigh and Manus O Gorman  choose to let if  go but no one spotted Jasper Rutherford ghost in and nod it over the line.  The move really summed up the difference between the sides    Newtownbreda were sharp and aware… Santos sluggish and one paced.

Still Santos continued to press and Lazio Mc Carthy was highly impressive in his off the ball work, yet lax in the two opportunities that fell to him.  Instead of playing in his partner Paul Brady  he choose to shoot from a tight angle and two great opportunities were lost.  Bill Johnston in goal for ‘Breda proved an ‘ace in the hole’ for his side.  He handled everything superbly and his shot stopping broke the spirit of the Santos youngsters.  Trying to emulate their rivals in throws into the box  on the narrow pitch; Santos foundered on the rock of the towering Porter who won every ball played in.

So half time saw Newtownbread lead 2-0

Santos game plan was to quicken the game and pass quicker and sure enough it had immediate effect as Brady fired 3 telling shots which the superlative Johnston saved  brilliantly.  Then with 20 mins left the front pairing of Brady and Mc Carthy had a total fade out  failing to control the ball and  giving ‘Breda the possession they wanted.  The game swung ‘Breda’s way again before the killer mistake of the season. . With no pressure and a simple pass back to his keeper on, Conor Mc Cormack dwelled too long and was caught by the ever alert Johnny Morehead  who was delighted with his gift.

And 5 later minutes it was all over  as the predatory instincts of the magnificent Ian Mcagowan  saw him dispatch another corner to the net with a beautiful run to the near post and the most exquisite of touches to round off a fine win for the Newtownbreda side.

Manager Mc Geehan was upbeat about the result. “ Christmas and the vile weather brought too many cancellations  which curtailed my programme of sharpness work and the players were sluggish.  Newtownbreda, also, are as very fine, very fit  side and were well worth the victory. A word too of consolation to my three players Mc Geehan Mc Veigh and Mc Cormack who made just one mistake each and  yet were all punished  on the day.  These things happen in the game and we just wish ‘Breda well, knuckle down on the training ground and look forward to next week”.  Significantly Santos last setback last season  at exactly the same period was followed be 19 matches unbeaten  so that’s the objective now….  an unbeaten run.

Man of the Match had to be “the Quiet Man”  Newtownbreda’s  midfield  powerhouse  Steve Porter who was inspirational throughout.
