Not 'Beautiful Football'

What could have been a classic and drew a good sized crowd, featured a second half goal blitz from Mc Quiston and a great defensive 75 mins from Santos will still be quickly forgotten because of its fractious ,bitty, petty incidents which ruined the contest.  A weak referee didn’t help but all that’s bad in football was exhibited.  Mc Quiston topping the league had excellence and pace in defence and as proved predatory strikers and Santos apart from young Brady were never really dangerous. But in the midfield areas Santos were shackled in an ugly bout of heavy and often late exchanges topped off by unsporting gestures that made a mockery of decent football.

So the game was eminently forgettable apart from the three lightening Mc Quiston strikes in a 10 min period on 75 mins. and a bizarre 4th goal which saw both teams stop for a whistle that never came then a Mc Quiston midfielder picked up the stray ball and poked home to the dismay of all..

Paul Brady did win a penalty for Santos right on the stroke of half time and after a long delay took the kick himself only to smack a post. This was to be the main Santos threat, but the match itself will be confined to the annuals of  “most forgettable” for the nature of the tackles and  the nastiness of gesture.  Mc Geehan and Mc Cullagh shipped bad injuries as early as the 10 min played on but their effectiveness was severely curtailed and lengthy lay offs now seem likely. Only Parker emerged as a threat with Brady though the back four apart from that horrific 10 min period were dogged and resolute but reverted to long balls in the absence of an effective midfield which played right into Mc Quiston’s hands

A very desolated manager Mc Geehan after the game conceded that Santos were outgunned and decisively beaten but felt that he would have to have a long hard think about continuing if “the beautiful game” plummeted to these depths again.
